The Atmosphere

Immediately when you enter Surf Brothers Teriyaki restaurant you will feel the warm, relaxing and natural aspects of their tropical island theme.   The beach mural covering the whole wall, the tropical style table and chairs and the wood menu board work together to bring a easy, casual feel.

The atmosophere puts you in the right mood yet it’s the food that makes customers keep coming back.

The Food

Their entrees are Steak or Chicken teriyaki skewers with white rice and cabbage as their side dishes.  And for the longest time that was all they offered.  Last year they added shredded Chicken teriyaki sliders and brown rice.

With a menu this limited you can’t hide a so-so dish.  The food has got to be outstanding and it is.

The steak skewers  are my favorite item.  Over the years I know I can expect the beef to be well cooked, yet juicy and very tender.  It melts in your mouth.

Both the steak and the chicken get their amazing flavor from Surf Brothers’ signature teriyaki sauce.  Unlike other recipes this sauce is not too sweet nor is it too salty.  It adds to the flavor without overpowering the meat.

Amir Karkouti, one of the two Surf Brothers, explained the quality of their food saying, “nothing is ever frozen, we don’t use microwaves, no preservatives or MSG and all the items are natural.”

Their Prices

Combination platters include choice of meat skewers, white rice and cabbage.  Their “Lite” combo includes only 1 skewer and sides for $4.99.  For 2 chicken skewers and sides it’s $7.29 or $7.79 if you prefer to go with 2 steak skewers and sides.  Their new item includes 3 chicken sliders with rice for only $3.79.

The History

The Surf Brothers restaurant in San Marcos, located at 679 S. Rancho Santa Fe Rd., was the second location opened by brothers Reza & Amir Karkouti.  Reza opened the first location in Encinitas back in 1992.  When Amir joined the business in 1997 when the San Marcos location opened.

After plenty of success they now have 5 restaurants in San Diego county with 2 more slated to open this year.
